It is sad, of course, that news personality Savannah Guthrie’s elderly mom has apparently been adducted and probably killed. But it is also really weird that this story – about one woman who has apparently been the victim of a heinous crime – is getting constant media attention while far less attention is being paid to all the women (and underage girls, at the time) who have been victimized by an array of very powerful men.

It says something about priorities that says something about who is being paid to prioritize them.

The Guthrie Thing is – again – tragic. But it is also a case of ordinary criminality – as opposed to politically consequential criminality. Whoever snatched Guthrie’s mom is not exercising control over high-placed government officials. Savannah Guthrie may hand over money to the thugs who snatched her mom, hoping they’ll release her. But it has no bearing on whether Americans will pay taxes that will be used to fund foreign slaughter or line the already bulging pockets of “defense” contractors.

The Epstein Thing is, in other words, the much more important story. Not – obviously – to Guthrie and her family, of course. But to the country – which ought to be more important to the media.

Why isn’t it?

Well, obviously, because the media isn’t as interested in the Epstein Thing. More finely, it does not want you to be as interested in it. More finely even than that, it is paid to divert your interest away from it – by focusing it (so they hope) on this Guthrie Thing, which ultimately matters not in the least as far as the political situation. The Epstein Thing, on the other hand, matters more perhaps than anything – not because women (and it looks like underage girls) were serially abused by unimaginably despicable men but rather on account of the blackmail these men opened themselves up to – very possibly by interests associated with a foreign power.

This is – if it is true – is not only many times more egregious than the mere lying about the skullduggery of his underlings that forced Richard Nixon to resign the presidency back in 1974.

It is far worse.

Nixon, as it turned out, was a crook. But – so far as we know – he was neither a kid-diddler nor controlled by a foreign power that possessed kompromat about such a thing. The evidence made public so far strongly hints that Bill Clinton was in that position, as well as numerous other high-placed creeps. The literally hysterical defensiveness of Trump’s attorney general – as well as of Trump himself – is unsettling for exactly that reason. Trump and Bondi seem worried that something might come out – either about Trump or (as has been reported) some of Trump’s friends.

Even if it is merely about Trump’s friends, what does it say about Trump that he considers it more important to shield them than to do whatever can be done to see justice done? To establish that the government is not riddled with kid-diddling cretins controlled by foreign interests?

The president said recently that he likes Bill Clinton and is troubled by the troubling questions being asked about his activities. This is very strange. It is troubling – to anyone who is troubled by the smoke that is suggestive of fire.

Speaking of that.

Thomas Massie has become the bete noir of this administration for insisting that this Epstein Stuff deserves serious scrutiny. There is no smoke where Massie is concerned. His name has not been associated with Epstein and there have – so far as can be ascertained – never been any allegations, even, of Massie having behaved sordidly let alone criminally in his private life. No woman – no girl – has ever claimed to have been hurt by him. Yet he has drawn down the wrath of both the president and the attorney general for insisting that the smoke be chased down, to see whether there is fire. This is not merely weird. It is despicable in its own right.

Who would want to “move on” from this Epstein Stuff before the full extent of the stuff is known and – where warranted – people who have done horrible things are held accountable? Who could be opposed to doing whatever must be done to cleanse the body politic of this metastasizing cancer? Is it not obvious that if this cancer isn’t cauterized – isn’t burned completely out of the body politic – the system itself will forever be regarded as not merely corrupt but evil?

Put more finely, the very legitimacy of the system – if it ever had any – is on the line. Bondi’s screeching about the Dow reveals a mind that does not realize human beings are concerned with more than just money. But then, Bondi has shown herself to be something not quite human.

Trump, too.

The sadness most of us feel for Savanna Guthrie does not obviate the anger most of us also feel about the way thus Epstein Stuff is being pushed under the rug, to the extent that Pam Bondi and Trump can jump up and down on the ugly lump that lies under the rug.

We’re not going to be distracted by the Guthrie Thing  – let alone “move on,” as the president and his minions keeps on urging us to. If they think we will, they’re delusional.

Also – very possibly – evil.
